During the Cold War, White Sulphur Springs was the site of an underground bunker designed to shelter the U.S. Congress in the event of a nuclear strike. It is also the home of Katherine Johnson, one of the first African-American women to be hired by NASA as a research mathematician. Johnson, who worked on the Space Shuttle Program and the Earth Resources Satellite, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
