Peterstown, WV, is a small town with a population of less than 1,000 people. Nestled at the foot of Peter’s Mountain in Monroe County, WV, Peterstown is ideal for enjoying the beauty of West Virginia in peaceful solitude or the comfort of a close community. While the quiet town may lack the luster of city life, a 1928 discovery during a simple game of horseshoes proved that sometimes hidden treasures lie where we least expect.
William “Punch” Jones, the eldest of his father’s 16 consecutively-born sons, was pitching horseshoes with his dad in Peterstown, WV, when one of the shoes fell on an unusual, shiny stone. Punch and his father, Grover, believing the stone to be a common quartz, tucked it away in a cigar box in the tool shed and forgot about it. It wasn’t until after the Great Depression that Punch had a geology professor take a look at the stone. As it turned out, that common quartz was actually a 34.48 carat alluvial diamond. Measuring 5/8 inch in diameter and possessing 12 faces, the “Horseshoe Diamond” is the third largest diamond ever discovered in North America.
Though Punch Jones’ diamond has since been sold, Peterstown continues to possess many hidden treasures. A local volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the town’s heritage has rescued and restored one of the town’s old buildings and re-purposed it into a community center, economic incubator and center for historic preservation.
